木頭產業是最興旺的
had its heyday in the 60s.
都是台灣黃檜跟紅檜
Taiwan Yellow Cypress (Chamaecyparis taiwanensis) and Red Cypress (Chamaecyparis formosensis)
都裁切銷售日本的比較多
were mostly cut and exported to Japan.
以前嘉義工廠差不多有40~50間
There used to be around 40 to 50 factories in Chiayi.
一間工廠裡的員工大約有40~50個
Each factory had around 40 to 50 employees.
40~50間工廠光是員工就有多少人了
That was a good number of people in the 40 to 50 factories altogether.
慢慢的林木局就開始沒有拔木了
The Forestry Bureau gradually stopped logging.
嘉義的木頭工廠就開始減少了
So the number of wood factories in Chiayi started dropping.
我今年66歲
I’m 66 years old.
我做裁切木頭這行業已經42年了
I've been cutting woods for 42 years.
裁切木頭就是從原木買回來在做裁切
Wood cutting is to buy woods and cut them.
裁切客戶需要什麼尺寸
A client has a specific size requirement,
就裁切多大的尺寸
I cut accordingly.
就拖去大型機具裁切
I tow the lumber to the large cutting machinery
看要裁切多寬
and decide the width of the cut.
裁一裁在送到小型機具細工裁切
I then send the lumber to small machinery for finer cuts.
這就是製材
This is lumber production.
那年我大舅子帶我來嘉義
That year, my uncle brought me to Chiayi
去買來自羅東的檜木回來裁切
and bought cypress woods from Luodong to cut.
那羅東木頭的檜木以前品質很不好
The quality of cypress woods in Luodong used to be awful.
都有像鐵削的坑洞
There would be holes.
裁切後覺得不行
We thought it was a no-go.
在轉向進口南洋木頭
So we turned to woods imported from Southeast Asia.
裁切我們家庭式的床板跟木質地板
We cut the woods into planks for household bed boards and wood floorings.
買這種南洋原木的進口商
Importers that purchase these Southeast Asian woods
每一個品種的木頭好分類好
would categorize all wood species
一堆一堆的放好
and stack them nicely.
到了進口商看你要多少的木頭
When you visit an importer to purchase woods,
買木頭是不能單買一隻木頭的
you can’t buy just one piece of wood.
這樣進口商是不會賣你的
No importer would agree to sell like that.
他就是整批在販售的
They only do wholesale.
我們要精算說買了這些木頭
We had to carefully calculate the yield of the purchased woods.
可以裁切頂級的木頭有多少
The quantity of top-class lumber we can produce.
一般等級的可以裁切多少
The quantity of general-class lumber we can produce.
我們要自己去精算
We had to calculate carefully.
我們要買要靠我們的腦袋自己想
When we purchase, we have to figure out
想說買這堆木頭回來我們可以裁切
how we are going to cut these woods
什麼樣的東西出來
and make certain products.
我們以前檜木是可以只買一隻的
The minimum purchase of cypress woods used to be just one piece.
現在不行了
It is not allowed anymore.
現在就是樹的種類進口近來比較多
Now, various tree species
一次都是以幾千米在計算的
are imported in units of thousands of meters.
這木頭買買的是品種
We purchase woods by species.
品種是不會搞錯
We won't confuse the species,
但是木頭裡面壞掉
but what's inside the wood can be bad.
有時候木頭它的本質不好
Sometimes the essence of the wood is bad.
一裁切下去它的裡面腐化蟲蛀
We cut it and discover the decay and damages caused by insects.
一個洞一個洞的那就不能製作品項出來
The holes in it make it bad for production.
那些裁切木頭的師傅很內行
The master woodcutters are really good at it.
你這塊木頭我把它切成一桶一桶的
A piece of wood is cut into piles of lumber.
他搬下來他要裁切什麼什麼東西
When the woods are unloaded, the masters cut.
那師傅的眼光就知道這塊木頭
A master knows instinctively that this piece of wood
要裁切幾塊什麼東西
can produce certain things of certain volumes.
從好的地方開始裁切
He would start cutting from the nice parts.
像有一些木材是用來做板模用的
For example, some lumber is used for molding.
我們就要把它切得更平切的一樣大
We would have to cut more evenly and of the same size
在把木頭細修過
and then fine-tune the wood
那他們去釘板模這樣釘才會平
so that when used for construction molding, it is nicely leveled.
我們在裁切木頭這木頭是無毒的
The wood that we cut is harmless.
工人在工作時比較有噪音
The woodcutters have to tolerate quite some noise at work.
比較有噪音
It is quite noisy.
因為鋸台在運轉空壓機在運作
Because the table saw and air compressor
比較會有噪音
are quite loud.
你沒看到這些都是老員工在這工作
The staffs that work here are all very senior.
這邊的員工都是40年以上的
They have all been working here for over 40 years.
工人年資都還有30幾年也有40幾年的
The woodcutters have been working for over 30 or even 40 years.
那有的員工跟我的年紀都差不多
Some staffs that are the same age as I am
還在學徒階段時
As apprentices,
要把這塊木頭裁切什麼尺寸
they have to figure out what size to cut the wood into.
會不知道要怎麼處理
They would be uncertain about how to handle it.
這些都是南洋進口的原木
These are all imported woods from Southeast Asia.
我們這個是比較快的鋸台
This is a table saw which is more efficient.
以前的檜木直接要進行裁切
In the past, cutting cypress woods directly
會在那邊想很久
could take a while.
一塊木頭裁切了一天還在裁
It could take a full day to cut one piece of wood.
會去想想說要怎麼換個角度
You’d have to consider the best angles
才能取得最好的木材
to get the best lumber.

檜木以前很便宜
Cypress woods used to be very cheap.
現在的檜木真的買不下手
You really can’t afford them now.
現在買檜木一呎就要3000多塊以上
Now, one foot of cypress wood is over 3,000 dollars.
要做廟門的材料
Materials for temple doors
在差不多20年前一呎才100多塊
used to be only about 100 dollars a foot 20 years ago.
現在要一呎3000多塊
It is now more than 3,000 dollars per foot.
超過了30倍的漲幅
It is a 30-fold price increase.
沒有人要學
No one is interested in learning this.
做這個行業工資很高
This industry pays exceptionally well.
這樣子一天最少還有1500塊
It is at least 1,500 dollars a day.
最高的2700一天
The highest pay can be up to 2,700 a day.
但是年輕人不會想學
But young people are not interested.
因為又熱聲音又大聲
Because it is hot and noisy.
那鋸子在運作他就嚇到了
The sawing machine is intimidating.
連想都不想靠近了
They wouldn’t want to be anywhere near it.
2隻機械手才500萬
Two mechanical arms cost only 5 million.
若是請員工那兩隻機械手做2年
Compared with hiring staffs, it only takes two years for the two mechanical arms
那500萬的資金就拿回來了
to earn the 5-million capital.
以前要10個員工現在只要一個員工
The job used to require 10 employees but now it only needs one.
